Art in the Community

During my first three semesters, I have participated in the following activities:

  • Taught Irish language beginner classes and bodhrán (Irish frame drum) workshops at weekend and week long Irish Language Immersion programs of Daltaí na Gaeilge.
  • Presented a multimedia work, “Going to the Edge/Setting Out into the Deep” in September 2006 and April 2007 to the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth Congreational Day and to the Federation of Sisters of Charity (Formation Personnel)
  • Conducted a workshop for the Poetry Club at St. Vincent Academy in Newark New Jersey, looking at the role of the poet in history (griot, seanchai, storyteller and prophet)
  • As part of a workshop on understanding mental health services, I used as an example of healing, a children’s story “Pedro y Papo” about a child who has to return to Puerto Rico after spending a portion of his childhood in Newark. Parents used the story for their own children who left Mexico, Ecuador, and Peru to come to the United States
  • Designed a poetry bookmark and participated in the graduation ceremony of 50 family workers receiving their “Family Development Credential” in October 2007
  • Designed and co-facilitated a workshop on Storytelling for family workers in preschool centers in Newark.
  • Participated in monthly art exhibits of the Art Alliance of Monmouth County in Red Bank, NJ
  • Was the first presenter for the 2007 Summer Series at Maris Stella, Long Beach Island with a mixed media piece “Poetry of Place” with haiga, photography and stories.
